Description: Sixth graders are required to perform a jump rope routine that includes seven elements or tricks. They must have someone enter a long rope as it is being twirled. They also must have someone juggle. They can add dance, gymnastics, pogo stick jumping a long rope, yo-yo tricks, or any other talent they want to showcase. The routine also has to have music. Through practice of their routines, sixth graders better understand the importance of cardiovascular fitness and the benefits of jumping rope. It is an affordable exercise that can be done virtually anywhere! |

Description: Dance unit on Tinikling. We also use Chinese Jump ropes for this traditional Philipino Dance. When you use the jump ropes everyone in the group is getting a good workout. There are three steps you will need to teach: hops, singles and doubles. These steps are taught in a straight line first and then we form the triangles. Every step is done to an eight count. The polers have to keep the rythm steady as the dancers are performing. |

Description: This rhythmic dance activity includes 4-5 students at each set of poles. Students jump inside and outside the poles while learning 5 steps: Bamboo Hop, Cross-Over, Bleking, Straddle, Straddle Turn. Students help others learn the steps then create their own routines. The poles are "knocked" on a three count rhythm - in - out - out! After the 5 introductory steps are taught, then we double cross the poles and have the students jump 4 at a time in the poles. This activity is great for aerobic endurance because the students jump, and jump, and jump and their heart rate goes up and they are having fun while getting exercise. Social interaction with each other in their group is awesome as they teach each other and help one another to learn the dance steps. |
