Pyramid Battle

Posted by: Corey Baxter

Description: This is the most effective, innovative, and fun game we use in our physical education class. When we play this game, students come in the gym jumping up and down with excitement. Students leave class sweating with a smile on their face. Academic classroom teachers love to see this game played because it reinforces what they are learning in the Math class. We try to play this game once every 9 weeks to not only polish their math skills, but to also build endurance for the mile run. The game is also flexible to many units. If we are doing this during our basketball unit, we will take the hurdles out and have the students dribble a basketball on their lap.
Materials:
-15 Hula Hoops, 30 dice, 6 cones, Hurdles, noodle, way to keep score.
I have used this game for classes with 20-80 students. It is great for large classes and gets all students involved. This is a game that integrates all 6 National PE Standards with classroom Math standards. I have used this game with grades K-5.

Halloween: Haunted "Gym" Stations

Posted by: Charline O'Neil

Description: Haunted Gym: Every year I set up the gym with 7 sport skill stations. All of the stations have a Halloween theme that really gets my students excited. I bought all of the decorations at garage sales and I set the gym up the Friday before Halloween week. All grades, K-5, participate in the stations with a few modifications. Younger grades have targets moved closer and the ladder over the swamp is lowered. I hope you enjoy watching.

Clean Up Sesame Street

Posted by: Andrea Solum

Description: This game is aerobic, reinforces throwing, and incorporates math skills. The students practice throwing recycled paper or foam balls into an oversized trash can (which is made out of mats). Prior to playing this game, the students have been taught the four steps of throwing: Turn your body sideways towards the target, put your arm in an ‘L’, feet together, step and throw.

There are several students (Oscar the Grouches) in the “trashcan” who are trying to litter the streets. All the people who live in the neighborhood are cleaning up the litter and throwing it in the trashcan. When the whistle blows, all of the students grab a piece of trash, unfold it, and find the math problem that correlates with their answer. These problems are placed on cones around the perimeter of the gym. New students go into the trashcan and we continue the game until all students have had a chance to be Oscar.

For lower grades, students can practice colors by using colored foam balls. Older classes like the foam balls

WipeOut Warmup Tag

Posted by: Andy Roloff

Description: Students listen to the beginning of the song for the drum part. Students are told to find own space and lay on the ground. Three to five noodles are given out for taggers. When the drums start all students (including the taggers) kick their legs in the air as fast as the drums go. When the guitar starts playing, all students stand up and flee from the taggers. If a person is tagged they receive the noodle and turns into the tagger. The previous tagger has to perform a stationary swim movement (arm strokes) or dance until the next drum section plays. When the next drum series start all students (including the taggers) stop and lie back down and kick legs. When guitars play again a new tag game is started. There are 4 rounds within this song.
Teaching Suggestions:
• 3-5 grades have the choice of dancing or doing a stationary swimming movement.
• Pre-k - 1st: Instead of having the noodle passed when tagged, taggers keep the noodle until teacher makes change to taggers during the drum sections.
• Kids need to be

Simple Machines and Motion

Posted by: John Theiss

Description: This lesson was used with grades 1-5 teaching them about Simple Machines and Motion. I stole this great lesson from Jeremy Seward who posted it here on PE Universe and I made some adaptations using the equipment that I had. I reposted a smiliar lesson because this lessons truely validates what we do as professionals and it demonstrates how we strive to support them. This is a really fun lesson and if you have a larger gym, it would be cool to introduce more Motion concepts/stations. However, my gym is small so I limited it to 6 stations.

How to End the K-3 Class Peacefully

Posted by: Greg Brown

Description: Great way to end the class for grades K-3 so they are calm & relaxed when teacher picks them up from gym class. This activity is VOLUNTARY and students do NOT have to do this if they don't want to. They can say "pass". Since 4 are going at a time, no ONE person is singled out as a winner or loser.
It's fun.

Tinikling Lions of New Caney

Posted by: Patricia Savage

Description: This rhythmic dance activity includes 4-5 students at each set of poles. Students jump inside and outside the poles while learning 5 steps: Bamboo Hop, Cross-Over, Bleking, Straddle, Straddle Turn. Students help others learn the steps then create their own routines. The poles are "knocked" on a three count rhythm - in - out - out! After the 5 introductory steps are taught, then we double cross the poles and have the students jump 4 at a time in the poles. This activity is great for aerobic endurance because the students jump, and jump, and jump and their heart rate goes up and they are having fun while getting exercise. Social interaction with each other in their group is awesome as they teach each other and help one another to learn the dance steps.

Hot Spotz Tournament

Posted by: Todd Reed

Description: If you have larger class sizes Hot Spotz Tournament is a team oriented game that will motivate and challenge your students putting their shooting skills to the test. In my earlier video "Hot Spotz" I explained the point value of the polyspots, small cones, and large cones are according to their distance from the basket.
-Polyspots Key Area
-Small Cones between the three point line and key area
-Large Cones are located around the three point line.

Students love the immediate recognition of making a hot spotz and bringing it back to their team for a chance at being the top shooting team in the class. Students are only three to a team, so students are actively engaged with little wait time in line.

Round one is played in the video to recognize the top shooting team from each court. Those teams will play on one designated court to crown the top shooting for a round two playoff. All other teams remain playing on other courts. In the video 16 teams are playing and in the end one team will be the c

Hot Spotz

Posted by: Todd Reed

Description: Hot Spotz is a fast paced game that involves dribbling, shooting, and most important team work. All students are active participants cooperatively working with their team to gain the most points by collecting Hot Spotz from around the basket.

My students are motivated by not only the instant gratification of collecting a Hot Spotz on a made basket but that they can shoot and be successful according to their skill level with Spotz of varying levels of difficulty. The shot selection is up to the individual from several feet from the basket to three point shots.

I hope you to have great success implementing Hot Spotz into your physical education program.

Look for my future addition of Hot Spotz as a tournament.

Flag Tag

Posted by: Theresa Sisk

Description: This is a very acitve game that keeps everyone involved. There are 3 ways to win this game.
1. Students throw gator skin balls at the opposing teams tennis balls to try and knock them off of the cones.(There are 5 tennis balls on top of cones)
2. You may also win by sneaking across and stealing the other teams flag. If tagged by the opposing team they must go to jail. To get out of jail a teammate may make it across safetly and then take them back to their side.
3. The other way to win is to get all of the opposing team in jail or sitting down. To get someone to sit down you have to catch a ball. Each team chooses a magic person before the game begins. The magic person can touch a teammates head that is sitting down to get them back up and into the game. If the magic person is down they stay down until the game is over.
