Life as a PE teacher

OK, we go to work "dressed up" we can have class in or outside.  We get paid to play, and we get to work with all kinds of kids, ones that make our job worth while and those who make it a challenge.  Coming from a military background I tend to have expectations that are higher than some and being raised in a home where respect was a given.  Today's kids offer new, exciting and tough challenges which I look forward to and also dread.  I love my job, I love going to work in shorts and a shirt with my NIKEs on.

Are there anyothers out there who at times struggle to make it through a day when everything you do especially lessons dont go as planned and it seems like organized chaos?  At times I think I am the only one who goes through this but I know I am not.  I want to be the best teacher and I want to be respected as one not only to the students but also to my staffs and the community.  At times seems like a lose lose situation but I keep going, knowing change is good!

Its PE, not gym, we cant teach the gym to do anything!

Your not the only one, I thik a lot of us ahve these days! Nothing can go perfect!! I work in a low income area, lots of gangs and violence! Students act up, act tough, give me lots of head achs!! But you can't let those students get to you!! Remember those you enjoy, those who pay attention, those who understand you, who enjoy seeing you and come to class.  Be there for those students and those who are the opposite!! What comes around, goes around!!

This is my 17th year teaching in the same school.  Times have changed!  But a long time ago I made it my goal to research discipline techniques and find the ones that work best.  When you have an ironclad discipline system in place your classes will respect you. (don't rely on your administration for discipline in your class, you are the authority)  Then your lessons will run smoother as well.  As far as staff and administration respecting our profession, it is a loosing battle.  I have found that younger teachers have more respect for our department but in general our profession is disrespected.  An instructional resource teacher in my building didn't even know that PE has a Voluntary State Curriculum!  I choose to educate myself and always try to be a workplace warrior.  I strive for excellence and when it doesn't happen I go back to the drawing board.  Just remember that you are an important part of your students education and if your lesson doesn't work out, tomorrow is another day!
