Equipment: 1 tarp and 1 6-8 inch ball per group of 6-8 students

Set Up: students surrond the tarp with both hands on tarp and ball in the middle of it

Activity:  students work together to see how many times they can toss the ball in the air and catch it before it touches the floor.  Ball must reach a certain height to be counted.

Alternatives: two groups attempt to play catch with each other using tarps.  During volleyball, use tarps instead of volleyball hits, have 1 student with a hula hoop and group tries to fling the ball through the hoop, everyone must have a turn with hoop and catch it.

Equipment:1 beach ball per group of 4-6

Set Up: students form a circle

Activity: students attempt to keep the ball in the air as long as possible.  Before anyone can touch the ball twice, everyone must touch it twice.  Can students beat their prior results? Can they move the ball across the court and back?

Equipment: any size ball softball size or larger, 2 cones

Set Up: split class into 2 teams.  One team stands in a line between two cones, the other is spread out int he playing area.  Members on each team are numbered 1-?

Activity:  The team standing in a line is on offense.  Student #1 throws the ball into the playing area and runs around his team.  Each time around his team scores a point.  The runner keeps running till he hears the defensive team says "out!"  The defensive team retrieves the ball and forms a line behind the student who has the ball.  The ball must pass through the entire team till it gets to the last player who runs to the front and yells, "out!"  After 3 outs, changes sides.

Alternatives: can be done with footballs, kicking soccer balls etc.  Defensive team must pass the ball a certain way, through legs, over the head, etc.  Instead of 3 outs, change after everyone has a turn.

Keywords: kicking, little equipment, team building, throwing

Here are a few quick activities involving team building that can be done any where.

Birthday Line Up: students must line up in order by their birthdays.  Depending on ages; no talking, try a few times on different days and see if they can do it quicker.

Alternative: line up by height(no talking and or blind folded)

Coffee Can Pass: sitting in a circle formation, students must pass the coffee cana round the circle without droping it.  Start with hands, elbows, then feet.

Alternative: use other objects such as rubber animals, cones, etc.  Try in line formation and do it across the gym and back.

Hula Hoop Pass:standing in a circle formatio, holding hands with a hula hoop linked, students must pass hoop around the circle without letting go of hands.  Then try 2 hoops, have hoops going in opposite directions.

Partner Draw: have students sit back to back with one having a piece of blank paper and a pen, the other with a piece of paper with a design on it.  Student with the design trys to tell the student behind him draw the shape he has on his paper.

Keywords: quick activity, small space, team building

Bombardment (3-5)

A fun alternative to dodge ball! Well known, but for the newbies.....

Equipment: many gator balls 6-7 inches, 6 bowling pins

Set Up: split class into two teams each on opposite sides of the gym. Towards the end of each side place 3 bowling pins spaced out.

Activity: students attempt to throw or roll balls across their opponents side to knock over their pins.  Once a pin falls, it must stay down.  First team to knock down all 3 pins on their opponents side wins.  Students may prtect their pins but only 1 student may be in front of their pin and their legs must be open.  No matter how the pin falls, it stays down!!

I recently tried this with volleyball serving where students could only serve the ball, worked well!

Keywords: bowling pins, dodge ball, fun game, gator balls, throwing
