I’m getting ready to write a syllabus for my middle school physical education classes. I want them to know exactly what is expected out of them each day. Does anyone have something like this that I could look at for ideas?

    Since
I am an elementary teacher, I don't do a syllabus!

    However, if I did..........

At top: my name & contact info(phone, email, office, hours) and what your teaching, little bbit about you

At middle:  What the class is about, epectations, rules, policies, what will happen if they obey rules  grading

I have a rubric I use but i don't have a copy with me at home.  I always give the speech in the begining of the year telling the students that their grade comes directly from the amount of effort they put forth during class during our cardio training and during game and skills work.  I tell students that I also expect them to maintain a positive attitude during game play and if they do not they will not be able to participate and they will loose points on their grade for the day.

    Walter,

From my experience, Middle School kids do not read or look at Syllabi anymore than we like to grade papers normally.  What I find to work well is to condense the long form of the syllabi into something shorter that I first send home ot mom and dad and ask for signatures.  In it, I share the expectations and guidleines I will be expecting all year as well as my discipline and grading policy etc.  What I do for my students is, I go over these things with them the first week of school and we practice them.  I post the key concepts such as my Ladder Apprach to discipline and conflict resolution on a Board in my gymnasium and I also post all of the grading criteria.  That way when students question it or argue over being "sit out" etc, I can point them to the board.  This is especially helpful when they say " I did not know".....  I use to write a syllabia nd found more in the trash cans and the locker rooms than what got home.  I have also posted my stuff on a Podcast which the kids will actually get into listening to.
