field day

I am looking for elementary field day ideas.  We usually do stations that the teachers take the classes to but the teachers don't like walking around all day.  Last year we did activities one class at a time while the other classes watched.  The teachers liked staying in one spot watching but it took way to long.  Any ideas would be great.

Gotta love teachers that don't support or want to be involved.  The best I can think of, is to continue your stations, but then have parent volunteers take them from station to station.  It is all about the kids, not the teachers.  I have some of my high school A+ students come and help.  They usually get volunteer hours for it.  Make it as fun for the students as possible.  They love this day!

Walter- I made a post about field day games and got some good replies!!  To be honest, I dread FD! So much work with little help for me!! Usually I have volunteers at each station and give teachers a schedule so they know what stations to go to at what time!! I think it's the easiest way!! One class at a time with others watching?? Yikes!! Send me ur email and I can send you what I did for the last 2 field days!!  eklindblom@gmail.com I usually have grades 1-2 in the morning for 1.5-2 hours and grades 3-5 after lunch!!

    Walter,

I just held our field day on friday.  A lot of what we did had already been done by previous teachers.  We divide our day into colored zones, and each grade goes to each zone at specific time.  Each zone is different for example.  Orange is in the gym and we rent inflatables and have games like a carnival.  Green is on our fields we had our local soccer club come and run a soccer area, and we also had an inflatable.  Purple is where we have children just hang out and they use sidewalk chalk and draw pictures as well face painting, and our high school jazz band plays.  Yellow was karate, and games like 4 square, tether ball, and horse shoes.  Blue we did something different and brought in a DJ to play music and we taught line dances that he would play before hand.  Brown was bowling, ping pong, and to break up numbers we had balls on one of our playgrounds.  We borrowed lanes and pins and balls from a local bowling alley which is part of the bowlers ed curriculum.  And after lunch we had a school assembly with a science center in our town.  That is what we did and everyone had a blast the teachers and administration just raved about it.

I split my field day up -

Pre K, K and 1st grade in the morning on Day 1

2nd and 3rd in the afternoon on Day 1

4th and 5th in the morning of Day 2

We have a field day that involves Relay Races!  A few weeks prior to field day I teach my students all kinds of relay races - bean bag relay, tennis ball relay, sponge relay, balloon sit, tire relay, 3 legged relay, sack race, egg and spoon, jump rope relay, baton relay, track relay - and so on - I let the students sign up for thier races after I teach them.  They each can pick a certain amount of races.  Then each class makes a poster and all of the races are listed on the poster.  The 1st grades race the 1st grades - 2nd vs 2nd and so on!  I get the other special area teachers to be the judges! At the end of field day, the classes with the most points(ribbons) on their poster are the grade level winners and they get a trophy.  The kids love the competition and the races! The teachers love it also -

I try to keep my field day sessions under two hours. I divide the school into four sessions and do two on Thursday and the other two on Friday. By having the students already trained on how to do each activity it makes it an easy day for the teachers and they really enjoy it. Good luck in your planning.

Sorry for being late, but I just ended the school year and had some free time. For my field day of 150 students, I set up approx. 17 stations which are run by the faculity and allow the students to go to any station they choose.  I stopped doing the timed station method and started this 15 years ago and it has worked great. This method has stopped the students from complaining that they don't like certain stations.

    Hope this helps
