Have them line up alphabetically by last name every time...After thd first 3 or 4 times they got it down pat...Practice it a couple times at the end of each class...
I have used several techniques that are usually effective. Aaron's idea is one of the better ones I use. I also call them up by name. I have used birthday months (i.e. "If your birthday is in November you may line up"), pets, color hair/eyes, clothing (t-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, etc.). If you choose to do it this way, be sure that students are walking to line up and send any student who does not walk back. This should discourage cutting/wanting to be first, etc.
Wow, Dan keeps beating me to post and has great ideas! I agree with him! Usually I don;t have to much of a problem, but certain classes I do! I do birthdays, colors of cloths, if they have a sister, etc! If they have a piece of equipment, I do it by the color of the equipment or poly spot! There will always be a cutter and I just send them to the back of line! Those who like to be at the back, keep them to the front! Or simply pull them to the side, talk to them and tell them that if it continues, you'll tell their teacher, principal, or parents! And stand by it!
