Something that has helped out a ton with this activity was buying blue and red cones and using blue and red tennis balls. It made each team more distictive and when they back in from the line, they would just go to an open matching color. I found the colored tennis balls at PETCO.

I played Mario Kart this mroning. I ended up using the idea in which each "cart" was two scooters connected together. The second scooter had a 12" cone on it and when the cone was knocked off they either had to do a certain number of exercises before setting the cone back up or they had to go to the end of a short line and the first person went in (large classes in which I didn't have enough scooters). I had some that connected together and others I just tied together via the handles.

About half way through I stopped the class and told them if they had a yellow ball (star) they could go up to a cart and just push the cone off. When a student got a red ball (heat sinking red turtle shell) they could tag any part of the cart to get the person "out".

I thought the concept was great but I made a couple of changes. I had all children playing at the same time, no one got out. Each player started out with 3 coins and they placed them under their cone for protection. When a player knocked off another players balloon they got a coin from them. So the object was to collect coins from other teams. Each team had a safety zone in the coners of the gymnasium. The safety zone had a bank inwhich they had extra coins; I started out with about 75 coins in each corner. When a player ran out of coins they could go and get 3 more coins and continue to play. Safety zones could also be used to take a short break; players cannot throw from the safety zones and other teams cannot go in opponents zone or knock off balloons. This version seemed to work best for my kids.

I thought this was a great game idea. It incorporates popular culture, which the kids will enjoy, is quite a workout, and overall a fun time! I tried this game yesterday and I made a few changes based on what I felt worked best for my classes.

It was a lot of work squatting down while moving the balloon around, so I had my students sit on a scooter and either attach another scooter to the one they were riding on (if the 2 scooters could connect) or hold onto another scooter. Regardless if the 2nd scooter could connect or not, the balloon (tennis ball) was placed on a small plastic dome. We experimented with various objects to hold the tennis balls but felt these were the best for our students. I originally had the students throw certain color dodgeballs to parallel Mario Kart (green shell = can throw underhand red shell = can throw overhand yellow star = 10 seconds in which they can destroy anyone they touch with the ball and they can't get out during that time). Later on in the day, it worked out best without having the designated powers for the colored dodgeballs. Mats were setup for barricades and tunnels. The students were split into 4 teams and couldn't get each other out. I did not have coins and played Mario Bros. music during the class to set the fun mood.

For classes that didn't have enough scooters for the number of students, I had throwers in each corner of the gym, representing the teams and they could use dodgeballs to try to hit balloons off of other teams' scooters. One of the throwers was a ball collector as well to keep the throwers occupied during the game. When a balloon was popped (hit off the scooter), they switched with a thrower.

thanks! I like what you said about kindergarteners being in awe and shock that someone would get them "out". We have a few activities like that and its amazing which kids understand that immediately and the others struggle with it.
