Equipment needed: 20 sets of lower case alphabet letters of all different colors. They are 4 inches in height and pasted on black construction paper and laminated. You will also need "High Frequency Words" that are grade level appropriate or a classroom spelling list will do. Set Up: Have the class divide up into 3, 4, 5, different relay teams. This will change with your class size. The teacher will then read off a "High Frequency" word or "Spelling Word" and use it correctly in a sentence. The first student in the relay team will run down and get the first letter of the word and bring it back to their team. The second person will run down and get the second letter and bring it back. This will be repeated until the team feels they have all the letters needed to assemble the word correctly. The team that finishes first is the winner or all teams that assemble the word correctly is the winner. This can also be played where students have to construct a sentence given to them or each student

A ton of fun! My 1st graders did this in class today with letter on index cards spread on the carpet. They really enjoyed it and I love knowing that it is an academic game!
