SINK THE SHIP: Divide the class into two teams and have the teams sit along the sides of the gym floor. Place the folding mats flat along the sidelines, this will be known as the SHIP. Place 20 bowling pins on top of each ship (the mats). The scooters are known as the life boats, and the students wearing the life jackets (jerseys) are the only students allowed in the ocean (the space between the two ships). The remaining students must stay behind their ships (the mats). Place all the cannon balls (foam balls) in the ocean. On the signal the students on the life boats must retrieve the cannon balls out of the ocean and give it to their team. The students on the ship try to throw the cannon balls across the ocean and hit their opponents bowling pins on their ship. Once all the bowling pins are knock down, the ship as been sunk and the game is called. Change out life jackets after each round.

Looks like a good game? Do you only allow the students to sit/kneel? How young do you use this game with????

Dan, I don't allow my older kids 2nd - 4th grade stand cause they get too rowdy. Also, by making them stay in one place it allows for the more less aggressive students a chance to play. When I played it standing it would only be the more athletic kids playing. I play this game as young kindergarten, however I do allow my 1st graders and Kinders to stand cause they can't throw as far seated (they still have to stay in the same spot). Let me know if you have any more questions! Shannon

Thanks for the reply. I like alot of your games/activities. I am going to steal some of them, hope thats ok :) Where did you come up with them? Did you create them yourself or find them from a website, another teacher, etc.? Thanks Dan

A lot of my games I make up or have learned in college and just modified it fit my needs. I was fortunate enough to have a lot of hands on experience and internships, so I knew exactly what worked and what doesn’t when designing my PE program. Steal away, there’s so many more great game I want to film and post.

Good game...modified it a few times to my liking. seperated the battle ships about 5 ft apart...used 4 mats on each side....two with 5 pins, two with four pins, they could be set how they chose on the ship...students could stand up and also could have only one person on each battle ship if they wanted to gaurd or throw, let them know to be careful, and not nock down own pins... that the person could not sit on the ship. Could kick, roll or throw. Scoot back for the bigger kids.

So I have been playing this game w. my K-3 students this past week and the one thing I am noticing is students who stand or get off the ship to retrieve a ball. Do you have any penalties for these actions??? Otherwise it is working well. Students are enjoying it!!

I can't wait to try this game with my 3-5 students! The only thing I had to adapt was the mats. We do not have enough to form ships for both sides, so I will have to use red floor tape. I'll let you know how it goes! Thank you for sharing!!

Thanks Shannon! I used this game at the beginning of a bowling unit last semester. I actually had the students practice rolling the ball over rather than throwing it. Later in the semester the students wanted to play again so I allowed throwing. This game is great.
