Hula War

A very fun Hula Hoop game. Divide your class into squad lines, send half to the front of the gym and half to the back. Each squad has one hula hoop to share. Start half of the hula hoop in the front of the gym and half at the back. Place attacker hula hoops in the middle. Students try to make it across the gym floor without losing control of their hoop, and must move in a forward motion only. Attackers can move anywhere in the gym and try to mess up other students by hitting their hoops together. If a student loses control, their turn is over and they have to give the hoop to the next person in line.

This looks like a great game. I just have one question. What is the best way to go about teaching kids how to actually hula hoop? I know from experience that there are quite a few kids in K-5 who are not able to keep a hoop up for longer than a couple seconds. Any ideas?

It really just takes practice and perseverance. I tell my kids to move their hips in a side-to-side motion, or a place one-foot slightly forward and move in a front to back motion. Most will try to hula-hoop by doing circular motions and are not very successful. The type of hoop also makes a big difference. The heavier the hoop, the easier it is to use. I buy the 36" deluxe hoops from Gopher, and use them for preK - 4th. We start off just practicing keeping the hoops up. We may spend one whole day just rotating between boys and girls hula hooping. For those who get it, they practice tricks like hopping, going down on one/two knee(s) to the ground and coming back up, or walk a few steps forward/backwards. Sounds complicated, but the kids pick it up so fast. Sometimes we’ll add a contest between rounds and pass out stickers to the winners. We do stations every Friday and Hula Hoops is usually of them so they get practice throughout the year. Before we play this particular game we practice walking across the gym with no challenges, then we’ll throw in the attackers (this is the only time I allow them to hit hoops, never during practice). Good luck!

Looks like a lot of fun and I am sure that kids who do not like to hula hoop want to be first. A definite idea for a future class.
