Elementary Football Unit
Posted: Thu, Sep 15, 2011 3:02 PM By: Joe
Any ideas for activies/games or order of skill to teach for an elementary football unit (4-6), possibly 3rd as well. I am in a school with no gym and limited equipment (about 8 balls and 20 flag football belts). I do have an outside area though.
I am thinking of teaching basic skills (throwing, catching, maybe some routes) and trying to get into some flag football type games. Any ideas is greatly appreciated.

There are a couple of things that I do. I do have them running routes and throwing and catching. I put out cones of the same color to make the different routes (ex. 3 blue cones make a 90 degree angle for an out route). I also put hula hoops that the children hold at certain distances and the children have to throw the ball through them. I also play ultimate frisbee with them so they understand how each team has to go to their endzone. I teach them how to punt a ball. The other coach does the NFL punt, pass and kick and take the top 3 in each age group to our local competition in hopes of winning there.

Thank you. I was thinking about doing an ultimate football game (just replacing the frisbee with a football) as a cumultive game. I like the idea of using a hoop as a throwing target (like a hanging tire). Don't have many footballs to work with, so there may be some standing around....hopefully the students have some they can bring in. Appreciate the ideas.

Joe, There's still time to sign up for the PPK competition. My kids LOVE it. I spend two weeks teaching punting, passing, and kicking skills, then 2 weeks of the competition during class.
My kids that dont' want to compete, help me with the competition. There's something for everyone.

One Idea would be to design a fitness lesson regarding drills they run at the NFL combine. Kids would love this, and you could even include Play60 which is a organization the NFL is pushing. Play60 has a website that the kids can login and have their own user account to continue with fitness in relation to football. Good luck!

I like these ideas as a cumulative game for the 3rd-5th graders, but I also have a 6th grade who I see more often than that other students. Do you think setting up actual flag football games would be good for 6th grade, or are they still too young? Opinions are appreciated.

4 weeks of football? 2 of which kids can choose to participate if they want...otherwise they "help out"? I must be missing something. :)

Jay,
I'm guessing your talking about my post. Sorry to confuse you. All students participate in football punting, passing, and kicking as a class. Then, we begin the NFL's PPK competition and not all students want to compete. So, they warm up with other kids (throwing, punting, kicking), they are my ball retrievers, they help me with measuring, recording, and gathering other students.
Everyone is moving, but they are doing different tasks.

Hey Joe,
If I were you I would add two more activities. I would do some kind of tag games using your flag belts. It’s part of flag football and there are thousands of flag games you could play. One that my kids love to play is capture the football instead of capture the flag. Another activity which tons of PE teachers miss is teaching how to hand-off. It is an easy skill to teach and kids love it. You can add passing to it by teaching them the “play-action” by faking the hand off and having them run out for a pass. Sounds like you are short on footballs so just do it in lines. Have a QB and a running back line. Rotate RB to QB. QB to the end of the line.

Joe,
I usually do a football unit with my 5th graders and we work on throwing and catching, hiking, and punting and some of the activities I do include running passing routes, flag tag, group juggle, and our culminating activity is 4 down football (students are put onto teams, that I choose, and they have 4 downs to try and score).
