Opportunity

Our children need opportunities to be great.  Opportunities such as getting an education, learning new technology, and participating in creative types of field trips. Here at Lincoln Bassett we are set in an urban community so I try to give my students more oppurtunity's by taking them on fitness field trips outside of their normal setting. This year I took my 7th and 8th grade class on a hiking trip. Besides my students becoming physically fit while hiking up the mountain they were able to experience the beauty of nature outside of a city atmosphere and  get a historical background on the mountain we were hiking.  Another oppurtunity was made available to my students after our hockey unit in which, I rewarded my students with a fitness field trip to an ice skating rink. Many of my students had never been ice skating before so this field trip gave them an experience they'll remember for the rest of their lives.  Lastly, thanks to a grant recieved for my district many of my students were able to become physically fit through fitness video games and fitness bikes. This idea of learning and sweating at the same time is great. Not all of the games incorporate math or reading but either way there is always positive results. If your school or district cannot afford to purchase this type of equipment. Maybe you can get  teachers in your school to pitch in $20 in order to by 2 or 3 nintendo wii game systems or try finding fitness grants online that you can apply for.  I tell you a truth when I say oppurtunity has created enthusiam and increased students learning in the PE enviroment.

If you get a chance please stop by www.thefope.com to check out how your school can incorporate fitness throughout the day!
